A Teen’s Innovation for Timely Medication is Enhancing Adherence Through Assistive Technology
Nikhil Lemos, a student from Vadodara, Gujarat, developed ‘Meditel’, a mini-robot designed to assist individuals in adhering to their medication schedules. Inspired by his grandparents’ challenges with timely medication intake, Nikhil’s innovation integrates multiple features to provide reminders and facilitate the medication process.

Observing his grandparents occasionally forgetting to take their medications, Nikhil recognized the broader issue of medication non-adherence, which can lead to adverse health outcomes. He aimed to create a solution that not only reminded users to take their medicines but also addressed other barriers to adherence.
From alarm to assistant — building a smart companion for medication
Initially conceptualized as a simple alarm system, Meditel evolved into a comprehensive assistive device through iterative development:
- Alarm System: Provides up to six daily reminders, accommodating various medication schedules such as pre/post meals.
- Integrated Water Bottle: Recognizing that the absence of water can delay medication intake, a reusable water bottle was attached to the device using velcro.
- Pill Organizer: Facilitates the organization of multiple medications, ensuring users take the correct doses at the appropriate times.
Nikhil utilized an Arduino board to program the device, marking his first experience in building a model from scratch.
National applause and global attention — a teen’s innovation on the world stage
Meditel’s innovative approach to addressing medication adherence garnered significant attention:
- INSPIRE Awards (2023): Nikhil received this national-level science award organized by the Department of Science and Technology.
- UNICEF Recognition: In November 2023, Nikhil presented Meditel to UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador David Beckham, highlighting the device’s potential impact on global health.
Meditel serves not only the elderly but also younger individuals who may forget to take their medications, demonstrating its broad applicability. Nikhil is now working on a new water conservation project, and is all set to fly to the United Kingdom in August, 2025 to present Meditel at Oxford University.
Meditel exemplifies how youth-led innovation can address critical healthcare challenges through the integration of technology and empathy. By focusing on practical barriers to medication adherence, Nikhil Lemos’s creation offers a scalable solution with the potential to improve health outcomes across diverse populations.
