Calvin Aranha and Farish Anfal, both engineering graduates from the Mangalore Institute of Technology and Engineering, embarked on a mission to revolutionize Indian agriculture. Their journey began with a shared passion for technology and a deep concern for the challenges faced by farmers due to climate change. Farish’s firsthand experience with the agricultural sector, through his seafood business, highlighted the urgent need for innovative solutions to make farming profitable and sustainable.

Climate-smart innovation for the future of farming

Krop AI’s core innovation lies in its AI-enabled hydroponic systems, which allow for the cultivation of exotic crops such as lettuce, basil, kale, and parsley in a controlled environment. This method requires 95% less water compared to traditional farming, addressing the critical issue of water scarcity. The system’s advanced technology and automation ensure precise control over environmental variables, optimizing conditions for plant growth and significantly reducing operational costs.

The founders recognized the pressing need for climate-resilient farming solutions as groundwater levels deplete and agricultural lands shrink. By integrating AI with hydroponics, Krop AI offers a viable alternative that does not rely on soil or weather conditions, making it a strategic response to the challenges posed by climate change. This innovation not only supports the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative by reducing dependency on traditional farming inputs but also contributes to the vision of a Viksit Bharat through sustainable agricultural practices.

Making tech accessible for India’s agri-entrepreneurs

Krop AI’s model has demonstrated significant economic benefits, with operational costs reduced by 50% and water usage minimized. The startup’s container farm setups, which cost Rs 5 lakh and can grow 500 lettuce plants, have already been adopted by 10 agri-entrepreneurs and companies. With a projected annual turnover of Rs 3 crores, Krop AI is poised for expansion, aiming to reach small and medium-income growers across India.

Krop AI’s innovation aligns closely with national priorities under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana, which advocates for “more crop per drop” by promoting water-use efficiency. It also supports the National Mission on Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA), the IndiaAI programme for promoting AI-driven solutions, and the goals of Startup India for rural entrepreneurship. As India advances toward its G20 commitment to climate-smart agriculture and its Green Growth agenda under the 2023–24 Union Budget, Krop AI’s scalable model strengthens the country’s climate resilience while fostering job creation and innovation in rural economies.

A vision rooted in resilience

Krop AI’s AI-driven hydroponic systems represent a significant leap forward in addressing the challenges of modern agriculture in India. By reducing water usage, cutting operational costs, and enabling year-round cultivation of high-quality crops, this innovation aligns with national priorities of sustainability and self-reliance. As Krop AI scales its operations, it stands as a beacon of hope for a more resilient and prosperous agricultural future in India.
