RoadMetrics Is Using AI to Map and Maintain India's Roads Smarter
Bengaluru-based startup RoadMetrics is transforming how Indian cities manage road maintenance through AI-driven technology. By mapping over 50,000 km of roads and detecting defects with precision, the solution supports data-driven infrastructure development and has been adopted by city governments including Chennai. Its potential to scale nationally makes it a key innovation for modern urban planning.

A Late-Night Drive Sparks a National Innovation
RoadMetrics began as a response to a frustrating reality—Indian navigation apps failed to warn users about pothole-ridden roads. At its core is a mobile camera mounted on a car windshield, which records road conditions during regular travel. The footage is paired with GPS and timestamps, then processed through AI algorithms capable of identifying ten categories of road damage—from minor surface cracks to dangerous potholes. The team initially envisioned a consumer app but quickly pivoted to a B2B model, supplying road condition insights to municipal authorities and private infrastructure firms. This evolution turned their app from a navigation tool into a powerful backend for road maintenance systems.
Making Data Work for Cities
RoadMetrics has built strategic partnerships with groups such as Tata and Mahindra and is actively working with civic authorities in Bengaluru, Mumbai, and most recently, Chennai. In Chennai, their technology is being used to monitor 419 km of bus routes and 100 km of footpaths to improve pedestrian and commuter safety. The platform enables cities to map defects rapidly, prioritize repairs efficiently, and budget for preventive maintenance, transforming how public infrastructure is monitored and managed.
This innovation supports India’s broader mission of Atmanirbhar Bharat by developing homegrown smart city solutions, and contributes directly to the vision of Viksit Bharat through urban mobility improvements and tech-led governance. The use of AI and GIS in infrastructure also aligns with the Digital India programme, which advocates for leveraging data and emerging technologies in public service delivery.
Driving the Future of Road Infrastructure
RoadMetrics has demonstrated that what works in Indian cities can also work abroad. A recent pilot in London showcases the global applicability of their technology, and proves that low-cost, mobile-first infrastructure assessment tools have a place in both developing and developed markets. Their ability to analyze 1,000 kilometers of road in a week—compared to months with manual methods—makes the solution especially compelling for cities facing growing traffic, climate stress, and budget constraints.
As RoadMetrics continues to expand, its model offers a blueprint for smarter, safer, and more efficient road systems across the country. The startup’s use of AI to inform public works is redefining how cities approach infrastructure—not just as a static asset but as a continuously monitored service. By bringing real-time data into the hands of planners and engineers, RoadMetrics is laying the foundation for more responsive and resilient urban environments.
