India’s higher education system is expanding rapidly, with millions of young people entering colleges and universities every year. Yet, a persistent gap remains between what students learn in classrooms and the skills employers expect in the workplace. This disconnect is particularly pronounced among first-generation learners from Tier 2, Tier 3 and rural communities, who often have limited access to quality mentorship, industry exposure and professional networks. Women from marginalised backgrounds face additional barriers, making the transition from education to employment even more challenging.

Recognising this challenge, Zuvy, the digital learning initiative of the NavGurukul Foundation for Social Welfare, has developed an AI-enabled learning ecosystem designed specifically for underserved learners. Through a remote finishing school and a mobile-first learning platform, Zuvy prepares students for emerging careers by building competencies in technology, digital literacy and financial literacy. The organisation’s larger vision extends beyond employability—it seeks to create an inclusive learning infrastructure where access to quality education is not constrained by geography, connectivity or socioeconomic background.

Unlike many conventional online learning platforms, Zuvy was built with India’s digital realities in mind. It assumes that learners may rely entirely on smartphones, experience inconsistent internet connectivity and be accessing formal digital education for the first time. As the organisation expanded its programmes, it also recognised that conventional assessment systems often acted as barriers to learning rather than tools for improvement. This insight led to the development of an AI-powered evaluation engine that provides personalised assessments, allowing learners to receive contextual feedback rather than standardised scores.

Building an AI-Enabled Learning Ecosystem

Zuvy’s technology stack comprises two complementary platforms that together support teaching, learning and assessment.

The first is the Zuvy Learning Management System (LMS), a custom-built, mobile-first platform developed specifically for low-bandwidth environments. Built on a modern web architecture, the platform allows learners to access coursework, assignments and recorded sessions even under limited connectivity conditions. Live instruction is delivered through Zoom integration, while the LMS manages course content, learner progress and classroom engagement. Instead of requiring expensive hardware or stable broadband connections, the platform enables learners to participate using the smartphones they already own, making it particularly suited to India’s rural and semi-urban contexts.

Complementing the LMS is Zuvy Eval, the organisation’s AI-powered adaptive assessment engine. The system is built using OpenAI’s large language models alongside a vector database layer that enables contextual retrieval of learner information before generating evaluations. Rather than administering identical assessments to every learner, Zuvy Eval creates personalised evaluation experiences that take into account context and learning history. The AI stack has also been optimised for low-cost inference, allowing organisations serving underserved communities to deploy advanced AI capabilities without prohibitive computational costs.

Although the organisation does not hold patents, both the LMS and the AI assessment engine have been developed entirely in-house. Over the past three years, the platform has accumulated behavioural learning data from more than 3,500 students across 25 states, alongside operational insights generated from over 1.5 million cumulative learning hours. These datasets continue to inform improvements in learner engagement and assessment design while strengthening the platform’s ability to personalise learning experiences over time.

Scaling Inclusive Digital Learning

NavGurukul Foundation was established in 2016 with the objective of creating pathways into technology careers for underserved youth. Building on this mission, Zuvy launched its first remote learning cohort in January 2023, extending NavGurukul’s residential education model into a scalable digital platform capable of reaching learners across the country.

Today, the platform serves more than 8,000 active users, including over 3,500 learners enrolled across 13 remote finishing-school cohorts. Approximately 95 percent of these learners are women from underserved communities studying remotely from Tier 2, Tier 3 and rural regions spread across more than 25 Indian states. Programme durations range from short 80-hour courses to intensive 1,400-hour learning journeys, reflecting varying levels of technical and professional skill development.

One of the defining characteristics of the platform is its ability to function entirely through mobile devices. More than 1,000 students have completed selection assessments using only their smartphones, demonstrating that high-quality digital learning can be delivered without requiring laptops or sophisticated digital infrastructure. This mobile-first approach has enabled Zuvy to extend opportunities to learners who might otherwise remain excluded from mainstream online education.
