In 2018, Payal Manan Rajpal, the founder of Robotex India, witnessed a pivotal moment that would shape the future of her organization. During a National Championship event, an 8-year-old boy from a Gujarati medium school presented a seed sowing robot he had built to assist his farmer father. This innovative project, created with limited resources and knowledge gained from YouTube tutorials, highlighted the untapped potential of students from less privileged backgrounds. Inspired by this, Rajpal envisioned a platform that could provide similar opportunities to thousands of other children.

Coding in classrooms, robots in rural India

In 2019, Robotex India launched ‘Robotex for Rural’ a program funded by corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, to teach students from marginalized communities the basics of coding, programming, AI, and robotics. The program began with boot camps in Ashram Shalas in Gujarat and Maharashtra, where students received 20 hours of training. This initiative aimed to bridge the digital divide and empower students with skills essential for future employment, aligning with the World Economic Forum’s 2030 skills forecast.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 posed significant challenges as schools shut down. However, Robotex India, in collaboration with FICCI FLO Pune and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, organized India’s first and largest digital hackathon. This event saw 15,000 entries and 3,200 participants developing innovative solutions for COVID-19 challenges. The success of this hackathon encouraged Robotex India to transition its teaching model online, reaching over 24,000 students across five states from 2019 to 2021 through virtual platforms and Learning Management Systems (LMS).

Building tech confidence among the underserved
Robotex India’s programs have enabled students from low-income families to create impactful projects, such as a biomedical waste-collecting robot and a floor disinfection bot. The organization has also focused on inclusivity by launching ‘Girls Who Build Robots’ encouraging female participation in STEM fields. By working directly with state governments and Zila Parishads, Robotex India ensures that its programs reach the most underserved communities.

Looking ahead, Robotex India aims to expand its reach and impact by training more teachers, establishing STEM Robotics laboratories, and preparing students for international competitions. The organization’s long-term vision includes a ‘Five-Year Mission’ to guide students through five levels of coding, robotics, and AI training by 2025. By fostering entrepreneurship and innovation, Robotex India is not only transforming education but also contributing to India’s goal of becoming a Viksit Bharat (developed India).

Paving the way for an inclusive future for tech

Robotex India’s efforts to democratize access to future skills education for underprivileged students represent a significant step towards achieving educational equity in India. By aligning with national policies and leveraging global educational models, Robotex India is setting a precedent for how technology can be harnessed to empower the next generation. This initiative is a national gamechanger, paving the way for a more inclusive and innovative India.
