Engineering a Safer Orbit

India’s legacy of frugal space exploration—from Chandrayaan to Mangalyaan—has earned global acclaim. But one of the hidden costs of satellite launches is the use of hydrazine, a highly toxic propellant that endangers technicians and drives up handling expenses. Manastu Space’s I-Booster system offers a game-changing solution: a proprietary blend of hydrogen peroxide and additives that is 40 times less toxic and 60% cheaper to operate. With 25% higher fuel efficiency and greater thrust agility, the I-Booster presents a compelling alternative for both national and international space missions.

The seeds of Manastu Space were sown during a student satellite project at IIT Bombay. Tushar and Ashtesh, having worked together on the Pratham satellite with ISRO, realized there was a critical need for innovation in propulsion technology. Starting with limited resources, they utilized IIT-Bombay’s lab facilities and soon attracted attention globally—winning funding from Lockheed Martin and prizes at innovation contests like Japan’s S-Booster. This enabled them to move from lab experiments to a working, tested propulsion system.

Driving India’s Self-Reliant Space Agenda

Manastu’s work resonates with India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat by offering a fully indigenous propulsion solution. Unlike imported systems that demand extensive safety protocols and expensive infrastructure, Manastu’s cleaner fuel can be handled in standard lab conditions. Their mini-thruster engine, producing 1–10 Newtons of thrust, is now being evaluated by ISRO and DRDO for satellite and defence applications. The startup’s trajectory is a powerful example of how academic innovation can fuel national ambitions.

The I-Booster isn’t just safer—it outperforms many existing systems. With combustion temperatures and fuel density that deliver 50% higher efficiency, and over 20x the agility of electric propulsion systems, the technology could revolutionize how satellites are maneuvered in orbit. It also reduces infrastructure costs by eliminating the need for special safety chambers and suits. This positions Manastu not only as a vital partner to India’s space program but also as a competitive exporter of green space tech.

Manastu Space is leading India into a future where advanced space systems are developed, tested, and deployed entirely at home. Their clean, high-performing propulsion system exemplifies the blend of sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and high-impact innovation needed to meet the goals of Viksit Bharat. As global demand rises for environmentally responsible space solutions, Manastu’s technology is poised to put India at the forefront of the green space race.
