The journey of Uravu Labs began with Swapnil Shrivastav and Venkatesh R, two engineers from the National Institute of Technology, Calicut, who were driven by a shared passion for sustainable technology. In 2019, they joined forces with Pardeep Garg and Govinda Balaji to establish Uravu Labs, focusing on creating a viable alternative to groundwater reliance.

Uravu Labs has developed a thermal and desiccant-based AWG that occupies just two square meters and can produce five liters of water per day. The system utilizes silica gel to absorb water vapor from the air, which is then released using solar heat and condensed into drinking water. This process is repeated four times daily, ensuring a continuous supply of water. The AWG’s design allows it to function even in areas with low relative humidity, making it adaptable to diverse climatic conditions across India.

Built for India’s Energy and Water Needs

Uravu’s AWG stands out in the Indian market due to its reliance on renewable energy sources, unlike conventional air-conditioning-based systems that consume high levels of electricity. By decoupling the desiccant and heat systems, Uravu’s technology can harness any available heat source, including industrial waste heat, to produce water. This flexibility not only reduces operational costs but also enhances the system’s applicability across various industries, such as textiles and breweries, which can utilize their by-products to generate the necessary heat.

Meeting National Goals with Ground-Level Impact

Uravu Labs’ innovation aligns with India’s goals under Atmanirbhar Bharat and the Jal Shakti Abhiyan by providing decentralized, renewable alternatives to groundwater extraction. Its work with industries like beverages—one of the biggest users of groundwater—marks a strategic shift toward more responsible water usage. The startup is also exploring partnerships with the World Bank and Ministry of Jal Shakti to bring the technology to rural and water-stressed areas.

As of 2024, Uravu Labs has successfully delivered over 1 million units of FromAir packaged drinking water, with over 80 brands and 100 outlets in Bangalore opting for this sustainable alternative. This milestone underscores the growing acceptance and scalability of Uravu’s technology. The startup’s roadmap includes scaling operations to offer larger capacity AWGs for industrial use, further reducing the cost of renewable water and enhancing its accessibility.

Uravu Labs’ AWG technology is reshaping how India thinks about water security. By converting air into safe drinking water using clean energy, the startup has created a compelling solution to the nation’s water crisis—one that supports both environmental sustainability and economic resilience. As the model scales, Uravu is poised to play a transformative role in securing India’s water future.
