Innovative Mobility Device for Disabled Individuals: A Transformative Solution for India
Aneesh Karma, a resident of Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, has developed an innovative mobility device, the MASC-KAFO, designed to assist individuals with weak lower limbs. Aneesh Karma’s journey into innovation was deeply personal. Living with a disability himself, he was acutely aware of the challenges faced by individuals with mobility impairments. His motivation to create the MASC-KAFO stemmed from his own experiences and interactions with other disabled individuals. Aneesh and his wife, both disabled, frequently encountered others facing similar struggles during their visits to government offices. These interactions highlighted the inadequacies of existing mobility aids, particularly callipers, which were cumbersome and often unaffordable for many.

From Concept to Creation: Overcoming Barriers
Despite lacking a formal educational background in science or medicine, Aneesh was determined to create a solution. His journey began with rudimentary materials, such as a cycle chain, and through persistent trial and error, he developed a prototype. This prototype, which was eventually patented in 2015 by the National Research Development Corporation (NRDC), offered a more versatile and user-friendly alternative to traditional callipers. The MASC-KAFO is designed to be worn comfortably, even in situations where traditional callipers fall short, such as using the toilet or riding a bicycle.
In 2019, Aneesh’s innovation was awarded by the Infosys Foundation, which provided him with much-needed validation and financial support, enabling him to further develop and refine his device. The award not only provided funding but also reinforced the importance of social impact over formal qualifications, a principle that resonated deeply with Aneesh.
Scaling Challenges and Resilience
The path to scaling the MASC-KAFO was fraught with challenges, particularly in securing funding and overcoming societal skepticism. Aneesh faced numerous rejections and financial hardships, yet his resolve remained unshaken. The COVID-19 pandemic further complicated his efforts, but the support from the Aarohan Awards allowed him to establish a workshop in his village, where he continued to refine his device and gather feedback from users.

Advancing Inclusion Through National Missions
The development and continued refinement of the MASC-KAFO device strongly align with India’s ongoing efforts to ensure inclusive development. This includes the Accessible India Campaign (Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan), which seeks to make public spaces, infrastructure, and services more accessible to persons with disabilities. It also supports the objectives of the National Policy for Persons with Disabilities and the broader framework of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. Furthermore, Aneesh’s locally manufactured solution contributes to the goals of Atmanirbhar Bharat by fostering indigenous design, production, and innovation that directly improves lives at the grassroots level.
Pathways to Scale and Empowerment
Aneesh’s innovation is currently undergoing clinical studies, with plans for retail distribution. His vision extends beyond the MASC-KAFO; he aims to create a range of devices tailored to different mobility challenges, recognizing that “one size does not fit all.” Aneesh’s work exemplifies the spirit of self-reliance and resilience, showing how grassroots innovation can deliver meaningful, scalable solutions to some of India’s most urgent challenges. By ensuring affordability, accessibility, and functionality, innovations like MASC-KAFO are paving the way toward a more inclusive, equitable, and developed India.
