The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 brought about a severe crisis for India’s migrant population. Displaced and without resources, millions faced hunger and uncertainty. Amidst this turmoil, a group of friends initiated a grassroots effort to distribute food along Mumbai’s Western Express Highway. What began as a modest operation distributing 1,200 meals daily quickly escalated to a demand for 10,000 meals per day, highlighting the urgent need for a more systematic approach to hunger relief.
Harnessing Technology for Social Good

Recognizing the limitations of their initial efforts, the Khaana Chahiye Foundation sought to scale their outreach through technology. They collaborated with Gupshup, a leader in conversational AI, to develop a WhatsApp chatbot that provided a simple, accessible means for economically vulnerable individuals to request food assistance. By leveraging a platform already familiar to many Indians, the initiative bypassed the need for additional app downloads, ensuring ease of access during the emergency.
The collaboration between Gupshup and Khaana Chahiye proved transformative during that period. The WhatsApp chatbot enabled the foundation to distribute over 4.6 million meals during the first lockdown and an additional 1.7 million in the second. The multilingual capabilities of the chatbot—supporting Hindi, Marathi, and English—broadened its reach and enabled communication with diverse communities. The effort also contributed to hunger mapping and data generation that could inform future emergency responses.
Reinforcing a Vision for Digital Humanitarian Tools
Though conceived in response to a specific crisis, this initiative underscored the transformative role of digital technology in public welfare. Gupshup’s scalable approach demonstrated that conversational AI could be rapidly mobilized for high-impact outcomes, offering a replicable model that NGOs and governments can turn to in similar future scenarios.

The success of this intervention prompted Gupshup to extend its WhatsApp solution to various NGOs and campaigns such as COVID Meals for India and Umeed by Sonu Sood. While the original initiative was situational, it sparked broader interest in using AI chatbots for social service delivery—affirming the platform’s versatility in addressing diverse humanitarian challenges.
Gupshup’s WhatsApp chatbot intervention during the pandemic stands as a powerful example of what’s possible when technology meets urgent human need. While it was a time-bound effort, the framework laid down by this collaboration continues to inspire new applications of AI in service of the public good—offering a glimpse into how future crises can be met with speed, scale, and empathy.
