Transforming the Operating Room: Surgical Robot Revolutionizes Healthcare Accessibility and Affordability
Dr. Sudhir Srivastava, a renowned cardiologist, has pioneered the development of the SSI Mantra, a made-in-India surgical robot that significantly reduces the cost of surgeries. This innovation aligns with India’s national goals of self-reliance and improved healthcare access, offering a transformative solution to the country’s healthcare challenges.

Dr. Sudhir Srivastava’s journey from a successful cardiologist in the United States to an innovator in India began with a poignant encounter. During a visit to India, he met a young woman with a critical heart condition whose family could not afford the surgery. This experience haunted Dr. Srivastava and motivated him to create a cost-effective surgical solution accessible to all, leading to the development of the SSI Mantra surgical robot.
From Scratch to Scalpel: Building a Tech Marvel
Born in Rajasthan, Dr Srivastava moved to the US in 1972 for advanced medical training, but returned to India eventually. In 2013, he invested his life savings to develop a surgical robot that could be produced domestically, reducing dependency on expensive imported systems. Despite initial setbacks, including unsuccessful technology exchanges in Germany, Dr. Srivastava assembled a team of engineers in India, working from his home to bring the SSI Mantra to life.

The SSI Mantra offers significant advancements in surgical precision and safety. It features an open-face console with a 32-inch 4K high-definition 3D monitor, enhancing the surgeon’s ability to perform intricate procedures with exceptional accuracy. The system’s head-tracking camera ensures that the robot only operates when the surgeon is focused on the monitor, adding a critical layer of safety. Additionally, the technology allows for the conversion of DICOM images into 3D models, providing surgeons with a comprehensive view of the patient’s anatomy, thus reducing the risk of errors.
Driving Atmanirbhar Bharat in the Operating Room
The SSI Mantra is a testament to India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, promoting self-reliance by developing indigenous technology. By reducing surgical costs by one-third, the robot makes advanced medical procedures more accessible, particularly in rural areas where healthcare resources are limited. Dr. Srivastava’s vision includes decentralizing medical excellence and making cutting-edge technology available across the country, aligning with the broader goal of Viksit Bharat, or a developed India.
Since its launch in 2022, the SSI Mantra has facilitated 500 successful surgeries in India, demonstrating its efficacy and potential for widespread adoption. In June 2025, the robot achieved a significant milestone by assisting in the first robotic cardiac surgery in the Americas, showcasing its global applicability and reinforcing its strategic value. Dr. Srivastava’s plans to expand the technology’s reach include modifying a truck to house the robotic system, enabling medical camps in remote areas.
Reimagining Healthcare, One Surgery at a Time
The SSI Mantra represents a significant leap forward in making advanced healthcare affordable and accessible in India. By addressing the dual challenges of cost and accessibility, this innovation not only enhances the quality of medical care but also positions India as a leader in medical technology. As the SSI Mantra continues to evolve and expand its reach, it holds the promise of transforming healthcare delivery, making it a true national gamechanger.
