Reimagining Braille Education: A Self-Learning Braille Tutor Empowers Visually Impaired Learners Through AI and Gamification

Annie, developed by Thinkerbell Labs, is the world’s first self-learning Braille literacy device designed to make Braille education accessible, engaging, and scalable. By combining tactile hardware with audio-guided lessons and gamified content, Annie enables visually impaired children to independently learn to read, write, and type in Braille. The device has been implemented in over 80 learning centers across 16 Indian states, significantly enhancing Braille literacy rates and educational outcomes.

In a world where Braille literacy rates are dismally low, four innovators from Thinkerbell Labs created Annie, a revolutionary self-paced learning tool that revolutionizes Braille education. With tactile hardware, audio-guided lessons, gamified content, and progress tracking, Annie has already made significant impacts in India and beyond. As Annie's reach expands globally, it paves the way for a brighter future for visually impaired learners worldwide.

Impact Metrics

World's first

'self-learning' braille literacy device.

16 Indian states

now have 80+ learning centres for this form of Braille literacy.

5,000+ students

with visual impairments are seeing improved educational outcomes.

India is home to approximately 40 million visually impaired individuals, with Braille literacy rates alarmingly low at less than 1%. Traditional Braille education methods often require one-on-one instruction, making it challenging to scale and reach all learners effectively. Recognizing this gap, the founders of Thinkerbell Labs—Sanskriti Dawle, Aman Srivastava, Dilip Ramesh, and Saif Shaikh—developed Annie, an AI-powered interactive, self-paced  learning experience that reduces dependency on constant teacher supervision.

Reimagining learning through tactile design and gamification

Annie is the world’s first ‘self-learning’ braille literacy device and integrates several key features to facilitate comprehensive Braille education:

  • Tactile Hardware: Equipped with a Braille display, keyboard, and digital Braille slate, allowing learners to practice reading and writing.
  • Audio-Guided Lessons: Provides instructions and feedback in multiple regional languages, catering to a diverse user base.
  • Gamified Content: Incorporates interactive games and challenges to make learning engaging and fun.
  • Progress Tracking: Enables teachers and parents to monitor student progress and customize learning paths through the Helios platform.
  • These features collectively create an inclusive learning environment that adapts to individual student needs.

From classrooms to global Stages — tracking Annie’s growing footprint

Since its inception, Annie has made significant strides in transforming Braille education:

  • Widespread Implementation: Deployed in over 80 learning centers across 16 states in India, reaching close to 5,000 visually impaired students.
  • International Expansion: Introduced a variant named ‘Polly’ in the United States, with plans to expand to the UK, Europe, South Africa, Australia, and the Middle East.

These milestones underscore Annie’s role in enhancing educational accessibility for visually impaired learners.

Annie exemplifies how technology can bridge educational gaps for marginalized communities. By offering a self-learning platform that combines tactile interaction with auditory guidance and gamified content, Annie empowers visually impaired students to achieve literacy independently. Its scalable model holds promise for global adoption, potentially transforming Braille education worldwide.
