Kritsnam Technologies emerged from the academic pursuits of K Sri Harsha at IIT Kanpur. His master’s thesis on the Ganges River highlighted the urgent need for data-driven water management solutions. Recognizing the potential of leveraging technology for water conservation, K Sri, along with co-founders Prudhvi Sagar, Neeraj Rai, and Vinay Chataraju, established Kritsnam in 2015. The startup’s mission is to develop innovative tools that provide comprehensive insights into water usage, thereby facilitating informed decision-making.

Taking aim at India’s water blindspot

India faces a severe water crisis, with only 4% of the world’s freshwater resources supporting 17% of the global population. The NITI Aayog’s 2019 report underscores the lack of reliable water data as a significant barrier to effective water management. Kritsnam’s Dhaara Smart Flowmeter directly addresses this challenge by providing accurate, real-time data on water distribution and usage. This ISO 4064:2014-certified and CGWA-compliant device eliminates manual data errors and offers insights into water consumption patterns, enabling users to identify inefficiencies and reduce wastage.

The Dhaara Smart also stands out for its plug-and-play design, tamper-proof build, and IP68-rated enclosure—ensuring durability in diverse environmental conditions. With inbuilt ultrasonic metrologic sensing, GPRS/4G telemetry, and AI-powered analytics, it combines ease of use with precision. Its in-house calibration system enhances measurement accuracy, and the three-year battery life, data backup, and virtual support guarantee long-term reliability.

Tech that powers national missions

The Dhaara Smart Flowmeter aligns with the Atal Bhujal Yojana, launched by Prime Minister Modi in 2019 as the world’s largest community-led groundwater management program. By supporting this initiative, Kritsnam contributes to the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, promoting self-reliance through indigenous technological solutions. The Technology Development Board’s funding underscores the strategic importance of Kritsnam’s innovation in achieving national water management goals.

Developing the Dhaara Smart Flowmeter involved overcoming significant technical challenges, particularly in ensuring low power consumption for long-term durability. The device’s IoT capabilities, while enhancing functionality, required innovative solutions to maintain energy efficiency. Kritsnam’s unique approach to power management is a key differentiator, with a patent protecting this aspect of their technology. Despite initial reliance on government contracts, Kritsnam has pivoted to a B2B model, focusing on bulk water consumers to ensure business sustainability.

Kritsnam’s efforts have led to a growing awareness among businesses and agricultural stakeholders about the importance of water efficiency. The availability of precise water usage data has prompted changes in consumption habits, with many organizations setting green goals in response to climate change concerns. The Dhaara Smart Flowmeter, priced between Rs 25,000 and Rs 75,000, offers an affordable solution for large-scale adoption, furthering Kritsnam’s impact on India’s water management landscape. The innovation is currently being used by corporations including Jindal Stainless, Tata Steel, Saint-Gobain, Ramco Industries, and Central Coalfields Limited—a testament to its reliability and value across sectors.

Kritsnam Technologies’ Dhaara Smart Flowmeter represents a significant advancement in India’s approach to water management. By providing critical data and insights, it empowers stakeholders to make informed decisions, ultimately contributing to sustainable water resource management. As India continues to grapple with its water crisis, innovations like the Dhaara Smart Flowmeter are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping a more resilient and self-reliant future.
