Sruthi Babu’s journey into innovation was sparked by a poignant encounter during her fellowship in Odisha. Witnessing the distress of a paralysed man who felt a loss of dignity due to his dependency for basic needs, Sruthi was driven to create a solution that would restore autonomy and respect to individuals with similar challenges. Her background in biomedical instrumentation engineering and her father’s unwavering support were instrumental in the development of Sahayatha, a smart wheelchair designed to meet the nuanced needs of its users.

The Sahayatha wheelchair is a testament to thoughtful engineering, combining functionality with user-centric design. It features an inbuilt commode with a self-cleaning mechanism, inspired by traditional Japanese bidet systems, and a rechargeable battery that lasts up to 30 days. The wheelchair can also be converted into a stretcher, facilitating easier transfers for users with limited mobility. This innovation not only addresses the physical needs of users but also significantly enhances their psychological well-being by reducing dependency on caregivers for personal hygiene.

The path to bringing Sahayatha to market was fraught with challenges, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic when testing opportunities were limited. However, Sruthi’s perseverance paid off when the product was showcased on Shark Tank India, securing a ₹1 crore investment. This exposure was pivotal in raising awareness and credibility for the product, leading to increased inquiries and sales. The success on Shark Tank underscored the market potential for such innovations and highlighted the importance of platforms that support entrepreneurial ventures in India.

Advancing inclusion through national innovation goals

Sahayatha’s development aligns with several key national priorities. It directly supports the Accessible India Campaign (Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan), which aims to create a barrier-free environment for persons with disabilities, and complements the National Policy for Persons with Disabilities by enhancing mobility solutions through indigenous innovation. By addressing the healthcare and dignity needs of the differently-abled, the smart wheelchair also strengthens the goals of the National Health Mission and Make in India. Its development underlines the importance of inclusive healthcare and reflects the broader vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047—a future where accessibility, innovation, and dignity go hand in hand.

A vision for the future

Last year, Sruthi received a patent for her wheelchair. The potential for replication and adaptation of this technology is significant, offering a blueprint for similar innovations across different sectors. As India continues to prioritize healthcare accessibility and quality, innovations like Sahayatha are poised to play a crucial role in transforming the landscape for differently-abled individuals.
