Solar-Powered Agro Vehicle: A Green Boost for India’s Small Farmers
At just 17, Suhani Chauhan developed the So-Apt Agro vehicle—an affordable, solar-powered farming machine designed to ease financial and environmental burdens on India’s small farmers. The innovation offers a sustainable alternative to diesel-run tractors and has the potential to revolutionize farm operations across the country.

of tractors replaced could save ₹217 million in diesel costs and reduce 270,000 MT CO2 emissions
Suhani’s innovation journey began with a field trip to Manesar, where she observed firsthand the difficulties faced by local farmers. Inspired to make a difference, she sketched out an idea for a solar-powered agro vehicle and, with mentorship from her teachers and support from Amity institutions, began building a prototype that would eventually win her the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar Award.
Designed as a low-cost alternative to traditional tractors, the So-Apt Agro vehicle is priced at around ₹2 lakh—making it significantly more accessible to small and marginal farmers. It performs essential farming functions like drilling, sowing, irrigation, and pesticide spraying, while being powered entirely by solar energy, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
A Solar Solution with National Relevance
Suhani’s invention aligns strongly with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat goals. If just 1% of tractors in India were replaced with solar alternatives like the So-Apt, the country could save over ₹217 million in diesel costs and eliminate 2.7 lakh metric tonnes of carbon emissions annually—showcasing both economic and environmental impact
What sets Suhani apart is her user-centric design process. She collected feedback from over 1,000 farmers to refine her prototype, ensuring it meets real-world needs. Looking ahead, she’s integrating smart features such as GPS tracking and soil pH calculators to boost utility without compromising affordability or ease of use.
More than a piece of machinery, the So-Apt Agro vehicle represents a shift toward accessible agri-tech that empowers rural communities. As Suhani seeks partnerships to scale production and distribution, her vision of a greener, farmer-friendly India is already in motion.
A Youth-Led Revolution in Rural Sustainability
Suhani Chauhan’s So-Apt Agro vehicle is a standout example of how young innovators can drive impactful change. By blending clean energy with grassroots utility, she’s not just building a product—she’s redefining the future of Indian agriculture in a way that’s inclusive, scalable, and sustainable.
