AI-powered Stethoscope Revolutionizes Rural Healthcare in India
AiSteth, developed by Dr. (Maj) Satish Somayya Jeevannavar’s startup Ai Health Highway India, is an AI-powered digital stethoscope designed to improve cardiac assessments in rural areas. The device converts heart and lung sounds into visual data, enabling faster, more accurate diagnoses even in remote locations.

Dr. Satish’s transition from a Short Service Commission officer in the Indian Army to a medtech entrepreneur was shaped by his time in the primary health ecosystem and his family’s medical background. Frustrated by the limited reach of conventional hospital-based care, he envisioned a portable, AI-driven diagnostic tool that could decentralize expertise.
AiSteth is not a conventional stethoscope. It uses AI and machine learning to convert heart and lung sounds into visual waveforms, transmitted via Bluetooth to a mobile app. These visuals, similar to an ECG readout, can be assessed by healthcare workers in the field and remotely interpreted by cardiologists. The technology removes the subjectivity of traditional auscultation, making heart and lung diagnostics more consistent, accessible, and scalable—especially where trained specialists are scarce.
Solving the rural diagnostic bottleneck
India’s healthcare system is strained by an extreme specialist shortfall—just 4,000 cardiologists for over 1.3 billion people. The gap is even wider in rural and semi-urban regions. AiSteth empowers primary care providers to screen patients early, enabling timely referrals to higher centres. By acting as a frontline triage tool, the device could drastically reduce preventable complications from common cardiac and respiratory ailments, especially among adults aged 30 to 65.
Deployed across 75 medical institutions in Karnataka and Maharashtra, AiSteth has already screened over 53,000 patients. The device has achieved 93% diagnostic accuracy, with positive reception from both healthcare professionals and students. Its expanding utility in diagnosing conditions like asthma, COPD, and TB adds further value, particularly for India’s public health priorities in underserved regions.
Scaling up for a healthier Bharat

With the government’s plan to roll out 1.5 lakh Health and Wellness Centres staffed by frontline workers, AiSteth is strategically positioned for nationwide impact. Its low-cost, user-friendly design makes it ideal for non-doctor settings, enabling wider access to early cardiac and respiratory care. As co-founder Ashwin Chandrasekaran notes, the team’s focus on integrating more pulmonary diagnostics will significantly expand the device’s relevance and life-saving potential.
AiSteth is more than a medtech device—it’s a symbol of India’s ability to develop indigenous, AI-powered solutions for systemic healthcare challenges. By enabling precision care in the remotest corners, it bridges the rural-urban divide and exemplifies the innovation at the heart of Atmanirbhar and Viksit Bharat. As Ai Health Highway continues to scale, AiSteth is well on its way to becoming a cornerstone of India’s next-generation public health strategy.
