Millions of Indian students graduate every year, proving the abundance of talent in the country. However, for many of them, job aspirations are driven by social pressure rather than aptitude or market demand. Professional career counseling is expensive and hence largely restricted to elite schools and families. Thus, there is a significant information asymmetry that prevents students from achieving their professional potential.

Career Compass, founded by Khushal Agarwal, aims to bridge this disconnect. Using AI as the foundation of a career acceleration ecosystem, this platform provides free, data-driven guidance to 50+ students in three Indian states.

What are the services offered?

The platform supports job seekers at every stage of the application process. For those who are still exploring their workplace options, it offers AI-based opportunity matching—analyzing their profiles, generating a list of relevant jobs, and then matching them to the best roles. Importantly, during this step, it detects and eliminates ‘fake’ jobs and scams. 

In some cases, a candidate may have already found a role that interests them but may lack the skills required by the employer. Here, the platform can identify what these skills are and how the candidate can develop them. To this end, it even suggests specific courses or projects for them to undertake.

Finally, Career Compass helps users optimize their resumes. Upon receiving a draft resume, it analyzes this document and assigns it a score based on standards ATS algorithms in the relevant industry. The score considers not only linguistic presentation but also weak formatting and other issues that filter out applications before they reach human recruiters. Along with this numerical value, the platform provides the user with actionable feedback that can boost the resume.

Who are the beneficiaries?

So far, the platform has been in its pilot testing phase, having been adopted by 50+ BTech and BSc students from EWS backgrounds in Rajasthan, Delhi-NCR, and Uttar Pradesh. Before using it, these students reported shortlisting rates of ~10%; this value tripled after they used the AI-based ATS optimizer to improve their resumes. 

Moreover, the tool reduced the time taken for resume preparation by 95%. This allowed these users to spend more time upskilling than on applying for jobs, also lowering the stress associated with the entire process. More than 40 of the students used the platform to find internships relevant to their skills. 

All in all, the platform provided the group with free career mentorship worth at least INR 5,000 per head—and saved them 10–15 hours of time per week.

Recognition of achievements

In recognition of the success of Career Compass, the founder was recognized as the Campus Ambassador for eDC IIT Delhi and as an Internshala Student Partner. He was also welcomed to the 2026 India AI Impact Summit.

Scaling further will allow more sections of the educated youth to access valuable career guidance, directing them to appropriate jobs and hence boosting economic activity across the country. 

Potential for scaling

To achieve this, three main challenges must be overcome. The first of these is the high cost associated with infrastructure maintenance. Career Compass is based on AI and is hosted entirely on cloud technology. State funding, such as in the form of subsidized GPU Cloud Credits, could lower these operating costs and keep the platform free-to-use.

Secondly, the general public is more likely to trust human agents over AI. To connect more users to the platform, tangible results must be attested by trusted institutions. For example, recognition under the NEP 2020 framework and related policies could boost perceptions of this AI-powered career ecosystem. 

Thirdly, Career Compass currently lacks access to many government portals for jobs and internships. Connecting to the APIs of the National Career Service, Digital India Careers, AICTE Internship Potential, and NITI Aayog Internship feeds would increase the number of jobs visible to its users. This would simultaneously benefit students and the public sector by sending talent where it is most needed.

Charting a path forward

When social and economic barriers to entry are lowered, skilled graduates are best able to compete in the job market. By challenging ingrained norms about where to work and providing applicants with free, personalized career support, Career Compass is helping reduce inefficiencies in the hiring and application process. Moreover, its use of AI to find and collate relevant information aligns with the vision of an economically progressive Digital India.
