Rizwan Shaikh, hailing from Bhusawal, Maharashtra, was an air conditioning technician who saw the limitations of traditional air filters. The cumbersome process of cleaning and replacing filters inspired him to research and develop a ‘filterless’ technology. This innovation converts particulate matter into a removable residue, eliminating the need for frequent filter changes. Together with his friends Shantanu Sonaikar and Irfan Pathan, Shaikh co-founded PI Green Innovations, marking the beginning of a transformative journey in air purification technology.

Revolutionary products tackling air pollution

PI Green Innovations has developed two key products: the Carbon Cutter and RepAir. The Carbon Cutter, designed for automobiles and generator sets, captures and converts particulate emissions into soot, which can be repurposed into ink and paint. This device reduces toxic emissions by over 90% and has been successfully commercialized since 2020, with installations across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. RepAir, an ambient air purifier, is designed for public spaces, offering 80% cleaner air by filtering out soot from the environment.

The startup’s collaboration with the Delhi government in 2018 to pilot RepAir purifiers highlights its commitment to public health and environmental sustainability. Plans are underway to commercialize these purifiers across Indian cities, with a focus on industrial-grade emissions in partnership with state governments. A pilot project is currently underway at a crematorium in Bangalore, showcasing the technology’s adaptability to various pollution sources.

Redefining how India breathes

PI Green Innovations’ efforts resonate with India’s national objectives, such as Atmanirbhar Bharat, by fostering indigenous technological advancements. The startup’s success in raising $4.5 million in Series A funding underscores its potential to expand manufacturing capabilities within India and explore international markets in Southeast Asia. This strategic growth not only enhances India’s self-reliance in cleantech solutions but also contributes to global environmental sustainability.

The filterless technology developed by PI Green Innovations has the potential to reshape the country’s approach to air quality management. By offering durable, scalable, and maintenance-free solutions, the startup is helping pave the way for cleaner cities and healthier communities. As adoption widens across industries and public infrastructure, this homegrown innovation stands to make a lasting difference in the everyday lives of millions.
