Innovative SunHarvested CoolRooms: A Sustainable Solution for India's Agricultural Spoilage Crisis

In 2022, 19-year-old Mahek Parvez from Chennai innovated SunHarvested CoolRooms, an eco-friendly, grid-less cooling technology that extends the shelf life of fruits and vegetables without refrigeration. This innovation addresses India’s significant agricultural spoilage issue, aligning with national goals of sustainability and self-reliance.

Despite India’s substantial agricultural output, a significant portion of produce never reaches consumers due to spoilage, contributing to the country’s low ranking on the Global Hunger Index. Motivated by this challenge, Mahek embarked on a mission to develop a solution that would help farmers preserve their harvests.

Harnessing nature’s principles

The SunHarvested CoolRooms technology was inspired by natural convection currents. Mahek’s design includes a brick room, an exhaust chimney, and a draft tube, which together create a cooling and dehumidifying environment. The draft tube, a critical component, uses aluminium sheets to absorb solar energy, creating a pressure void that facilitates air circulation. This process mimics natural land and sea breezes, maintaining optimal temperature and humidity levels to prevent spoilage.

Mahek’s innovation offers a sustainable alternative to traditional cold storage, which is often inaccessible to rural farmers and contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. By eliminating the need for refrigeration, SunHarvested CoolRooms can significantly reduce the environmental impact of food preservation. The technology has the potential to cut down on the 14% of global greenhouse gases emitted by conventional refrigerants.

Developing the SunHarvested CoolRooms was not without challenges. Mahek faced difficulties in sourcing materials and explaining her unique design to manufacturers. However, her perseverance paid off when her project won the Lexus Design Award India 2023 in the ‘Eco-Innovation’ category, standing out among 1,000 entries nationwide.

Implications for rural India and beyond

The successful pilot of SunHarvested CoolRooms demonstrated its effectiveness, with sensors indicating a significant reduction in humidity and temperature within the storage environment. This innovation holds great promise for rural India, where farmers often lack access to adequate storage facilities. By preventing spoilage, the technology can enhance food security and improve the livelihoods of farmers.

SunHarvested CoolRooms could support the objectives of the National Mission on Sustainable Agriculture and the National Action Plan on Climate Change by promoting low-emission, energy-efficient agricultural practices. It could also further the goals of the PM Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) Scheme and the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization by equipping smallholder farmers with affordable and decentralized storage infrastructure. By reducing food loss and post-harvest spoilage, the technology strengthens food security and contributes to India’s commitments under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

Rethinking agricultural sustainability for India’s future

Mahek’s mentor, Prof. Harish JK, highlights the broader environmental benefits of this innovation, noting its potential to curb emissions from both rotting produce and traditional cold storage. As India strives towards sustainability and self-reliance, innovations like SunHarvested CoolRooms are crucial. They not only address immediate challenges but also contribute to long-term national goals such as Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat.
