The journey of Greenway Grameen Infra began in 2008 when Ankit Mathur, an IIM-Ahmedabad graduate, and Neha Juneja, a Delhi College of Engineering alumna, identified a critical gap in rural energy solutions. The Smart Stove, a result of extensive research and multiple prototypes, is a single-burner, high-efficiency cookstove that reduces smoke emissions by 70% and saves 65% of fuel. It operates on various solid biomass fuels, such as wood and crop waste, and features patented air regulation technology for better combustion. This innovation not only decreases greenhouse gas emissions but also enhances the safety and health of users by eliminating carbon monoxide and reducing the risk of burns and eye irritation.

Reclaiming time and dignity for rural women
The impact of the Smart Stove extends beyond environmental benefits. For women like Lalita Marshkole from Madhya Pradesh, the stove has transformed daily life by reducing cooking time and the need for frequent firewood collection. This has allowed women to reclaim valuable time for family and other activities. However, the initial challenge was affordability, as many rural women lacked the financial means to purchase the stove outright. To address this, Greenway Grameen Infra partnered with micro-finance institutions, self-help groups, and NGOs to offer financial packages and subsidies, ensuring broader accessibility.

Supporting India’s clean energy and health missions
The Smart Stove initiative aligns with India’s national objectives, such as the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, which aims to provide clean cooking fuel to rural households. It also supports the National Bio-Energy Programme and the Swachh Bharat Mission by promoting sustainable energy and reducing air pollution from biomass combustion. By reducing reliance on traditional stoves, Greenway Grameen Infra contributes to the Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) mission and the broader goal of Viksit Bharat (developed India). The company’s efforts have already impacted over 10 million people across the Indian subcontinent and parts of Africa, showcasing the potential for replication and scalability.
Looking ahead, Greenway Grameen Infra aims to reach 20 million households by 2030, further expanding its impact on rural communities. The Smart Stove is not just a product but a catalyst for change, offering a sustainable solution to one of India’s most pressing public health challenges. By continuing to innovate and collaborate with strategic partners, Greenway Grameen Infra is poised to play a pivotal role in transforming rural energy consumption and improving the quality of life for millions. This initiative exemplifies how targeted technological innovation can drive national progress and empower communities, making it a true gamechanger for India.
